If you support the Democrats accomplishing needed improvements during these next two years, please contact your Senators NOW with the following message: Now that the Democrats have control of both houses of Congress, the expectation is high that you will do what is necessary to solve the many crises we have been left with, after too many years of Republican control. Please don't make the mistake made during the Obama presidency. Please END THE FILIBUSTER now, while you can. If the filibuster remains in place, little will be accomplished because you will rarely get enough Republicans on board to achieve 60% majority. With little accomplished, Republicans will gain seats in 2022 with the slogan "Democrats gave us a do-nothing Congress." And Progressive Democrats will have less enthusiasm to get out the vote if none of their wish-list is accomplished. Please don't make the mistake of playing defense - worrying about what happens if the Republicans regain the Senate without the filibuster in place. Now you have a majority; now is the time to play offense. Furthermore, "majority rule" is 50% plus one. A 60% majority is flat-out undemocratic. Alexander Hamilton wrote in Federalist 22, the idea that a supermajority encouraged cooperation had proven deceptive: “What at first sight may seem a remedy, is, in reality, a poison.” Rather than encourage cooperation, the effect of requiring more than a majority substitutes the pleasure, caprice or artifices of a minority to the regular deliberations and decisions of a respectable majority. I Spent 4 Years Trying To Understand Trump-Voting Abuse Survivors. Here’s What I Learned. By Meg Stone executive director of IMPACT Boston, an organization that works to prevent abuse by giving people the skills to keep themselves and others safe. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/white-women-voted-for-trump_n_5fcfe391c5b6787f2a9b7c98?ncid=APPLENEWS00001 I never found my way to any magical common ground that is supposed to unite us in spite of our political differences. [As a child, she was raped by a leader of her church.] She was always afraid of being raped again. That’s why she chose Trump. He promised to close our borders, and secure borders made her feel safe. The American Abyss A historian of fascism and political atrocity on Trump, the mob and what comes next. The Trial of Donald Trump Must Tell the Full Story of the Capitol Insurrection By Masha Gessen January 15, 2021 https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-trial-of-donald-trump-must-tell-the-full-story-of-the-capitol-insurrection Wednesday’s impeachment hearing, like the first, was legible only through one of two frames: either Trump organized an attempted coup and was being impeached for it, or, as Rep. Jim Jordan claimed, “It’s always been about getting the President no matter what. It’s an obsession.” Jill Lepore wrote, “Any formulation is a non-starter if it diminishes the culpability of people in positions of power who perpetrated the lie that the election was stolen.” The task before the Senate, then, ought to be to produce the first draft of those history books. If he remains unpunished, his antidemocratic movement will persist in mainstream American culture. … The MAGA movement shares with the Lost Cause (Civil War Secession) a rejection of historical fact, a consuming cult of personality, and a valorization of violence. I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYkACVDFmeg Lyrics At first I was afraid, I was petrified Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong And I grew strong And I learned how to get along And so you're back From outer space I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face I should have changed that stupid lock, I should have made you leave your key If I'd known for just one second you'd be back to bother me Go on now, go, walk out the door Just turn around now 'Cause you're not welcome anymore Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye Do you think I'd crumble Did you think I'd lay down and die? Oh no, not I, I will survive Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive I've got all my life to live And I've got all my love to give and I'll survive I will survive I will survive It took all the strength I had not to fall apart Kept trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart And I spent oh-so many nights just feeling sorry for myself I used to cry But now I hold my head up high and you see me Somebody new I'm not that chained-up little person and still in love with you And so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free Well, now I'm saving all my lovin' for someone who's loving me Go on now, go, walk out the door Just turn around now 'Cause you're not welcome anymore Weren't you the one who tried to crush me with goodbye Do you think I'd crumble Did you think I'd lay down and die? Oh no, not I, I will survive Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive I've got all my life to live And I've got all my love to give and I'll survive I will survive Oh Go on now, go, walk out the door Just turn around now 'Cause you're not welcome anymore Weren't you the one who tried to crush me with goodbye Do you think I'd crumble Did you think I'd lay down and die? Oh no, not I, I will survive Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive I've got all my life to live And I've got all my love to give and I'll survive I will survive I will survive At Festival de Viña in Chile https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EaPoFyddfw Homaje a Celia Cruz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyco35FHCx0 with Ethan Bosnick https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OaEnA4diCI |
